Each year, hundreds of young talents from around the globe participate in the European Forum Alpbach (EFA) and attend our event. In the town of Alpbach, students, young professionals, and agents of change participate in a variety of scientific, competence-based, and artistic seminars, enjoy a high-level conference programme, and participate in social and cultural activities. Together, EFA and the Forum Alpbach Network (FAN) provide over 400 scholarships.

Alpbach is a place that exposes minds and souls to the future of Europe. A platform that stimulates thought and action. About the European Forum Alpbach (EFA)

The Forum Alpbach’s mission for the present and the future is straightforward: the European Forum Alpbach is a space and venue for the emergence of reflection and action.

It brings together young people from Europe and around the world with the most inventive minds from politics, industry, civil society, culture, and science in order to generate ideas for a democratic and powerful Europe. With this broad, intergenerational, and interdisciplinary group, the Forum influences the learning and decision-making of major players across the European continent.

The European Forum Alpbach brings together young people from Europe and throughout the world, as well as eminent researchers, thinkers, scientists, policymakers, businesspeople, and members of civil society, to engage in and contribute to the aim of creating a more powerful Europe.

Scholarship Benefits

A scholarship to EFA covers the participation fee and your housing for the duration of EFA23 (19 August to 2 September 2023). In addition, EFA scholarship recipients receive a daily allowance of €20.00. Several Clubs within the Forum Alpbach Network compensate scholarship recipients’ travel expenses and/or daily stipends (please refer to their respective websites.)

Eligibility Criteria

A scholarship to attend the European Forum Alpbach is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 30. (up to 35 for African applicants). We encourage applications from all nations and academic specialties. Non-graduates and artists are particularly encouraged to apply. Please notice the following eligibility requirements:

First-time scholarship recipient: You have not previously been awarded a scholarship by the European Forum Alpbach.

Minimum B2 English Proficiency: The primary language of the European Forum Alpbach is English. Hence, fluency in the English language is necessary (minimum level B2 of Common European Framework of Reference). You will be required to show documentation to demonstrate your English competence (see application process).

Between the ages of 18 and 30 (or 18 and 35 for African applicants): All first-time applicants for a scholarship must be between the ages of 18 and 30. African applicants must be at least 35 years old. (i.e., born between 03 September 1992 and 19 August 2005 for all candidates except Africans; born between 03 September 1987 and 19 August 2005 for Africans)

Minimum 12-day Participation: All applicants must be able to attend the European Forum Alpbach 2023 for at least 12 days.

We urge applicants from disadvantaged socioeconomic situations, ethnic or religious minorities, the LGBTQ+ community, individuals with disabilities, and refugees or displaced persons to apply for a scholarship. You may include membership in one of these organisations in your motivational statement if you identify with one of them. We will take it into account in our jury evaluation.

You may apply through either the EFA’s application portal or one of the FAN’s alumni groups.

FAN groups endeavour to make the Alpbach experience accessible to new scholarship recipients from their respective locations. If you have a regional affiliation with one (or more) of the 30 existing FAN Clubs, and if they offer scholarships, we recommend applying there. Smaller mentorship arrangements and fast incorporation into our alumni network will be to your advantage. (Note: by regional association, we mean nationality or current/previous resident status)

If the Club in your country does not give scholarships or there is no Club in your country, we encourage you to apply through the EFA. The EFA scholarship programme is accessible to applicants from all regions of the world*, with a particular emphasis on Europe (outside Austria).

*Except for citizens of the Republic of China (Taiwan) or permanent residents of Taiwan: Please apply through the Lung Yingtai Cultural Foundation.
