History of Nigerian University Grading System

The way Nigerian universities grade students has changed over time. When Nigeria gained independence, our universities used the British system because that’s who established our first universities.

In those early days, students were mainly graded with classifications like First Class, Second Class (Upper and Lower), and Third Class – without the detailed points system we use today.

Over time, Nigerian universities developed their own 5-point CGPA system which has become the standard across most institutions. Some universities briefly experimented with a 7-point system and others with a 4-point system (similar to American universities), but the 5-point system is now most common.

Current Nigerian University Grading System Explained

Most Nigerian universities use the 5.0 grading scale where 5.0 is the highest possible grade point average you can achieve. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

Percentage ScoreLetter GradeGrade Point
70-100%A5.0
60-69%B4.0
50-59%C3.0
45-49%D2.0
40-44%E1.0
0-39%F0.0

So if you score 75% in a test or exam, that’s an ‘A’ grade which equals 5.0 grade points for that course. If you score 65%, that’s a ‘B’ grade which equals 4.0 grade points.

The meaning of GPA and CGPA:

  • GPA (Grade Point Average): This is your average grade for a single semester
  • CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average): This is your overall average grade across all semesters you’ve completed

How to Calculate Your GPA

Here’s a simple example of calculating your GPA for one semester:

Let’s say you took 5 courses with different credit units:

CourseCredit UnitsScoreGradeGrade Point
MTH101372%A5.0
PHY101365%B4.0
CHM101358%C3.0
GST101248%D2.0
BIO101275%A5.0

To calculate GPA:

  1. Multiply each grade point by the credit units for that course
  2. Add all these numbers up
  3. Divide by the total number of credit units

For the example above:

  1. MTH101: 5.0 × 3 = 15.0
  2. PHY101: 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
  3. CHM101: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
  4. GST101: 2.0 × 2 = 4.0
  5. BIO101: 5.0 × 2 = 10.0

Total weighted points = 15.0 + 12.0 + 9.0 + 4.0 + 10.0 = 50.0 Total credit units = 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 13

GPA = 50.0 ÷ 13 = 3.85

So your GPA for that semester would be 3.85, which is a good result!

Classification of Degrees in Nigerian Universities

After completing your program, your final CGPA determines your degree classification:

CGPA RangeDegree Classification
4.50 – 5.00First Class Honours
3.50 – 4.49Second Class Honours (Upper Division)
2.40 – 3.49Second Class Honours (Lower Division)
1.50 – 2.39Third Class Honours
1.00 – 1.49Pass
0.00 – 0.99Fail

These classifications matter a lot for your future! Here’s what they mean:

  • First Class: This is excellent! You’ll have great job opportunities, and can easily qualify for scholarships for further studies.
  • Second Class Upper (2:1): Very good result that most good employers look for. You can still get scholarships and admission for postgraduate studies.
  • Second Class Lower (2:2): A decent result. You can still get good jobs, but might need to work harder to stand out.
  • Third Class/Pass: You’ve earned your degree, but might face more challenges in the job market or getting into postgraduate programs.

Variations in Nigerian University Grading Systems

While most universities use the 5-point system, there are some variations:

Universities Using 4-Point Scale

Some universities in Nigeria use a 4-point scale similar to American universities. In this system:

  • A = 4.0
  • B = 3.0
  • C = 2.0
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0.0

Universities using this system include Covenant University and some private universities.

Medical and Law Schools

Medical and Law schools often have different grading systems. For example, medical schools might use:

  • Distinction
  • Credit
  • Pass
  • Fail

Law school results at the Nigerian Law School use:

  • First Class
  • Second Class Upper
  • Second Class Lower
  • Pass
  • Fail

Differences Between Federal, State, and Private Universities

  • Federal universities mostly stick to the traditional 5-point system
  • State universities usually follow the 5-point system but might have slight variations
  • Private universities often have stricter grading with higher passing marks and some use the 4-point system

How Courses are Weighted and Calculated

Understanding course units (also called credit units) is very important for calculating your GPA correctly.

What are Credit Units?

Credit units show how important or intensive a course is. A 3-unit course typically requires more work and contributes more to your CGPA than a 1-unit course.

Usually:

  • Major courses have 3-4 units
  • Minor courses have 1-2 units
  • Practical/lab courses often have an extra unit for lab work

Core vs. Elective Courses

  • Core courses are compulsory and usually carry more units
  • Elective courses are optional choices but still count toward your CGPA

Calculating Cumulative GPA (CGPA)

Your CGPA combines all your semester GPAs throughout your university program. Here’s how to calculate it:

  1. Find the total weighted points from all semesters
  2. Divide by the total credit units from all semesters

For example, if you have:

  • Semester 1: GPA 3.85 (13 credit units) = 50.05 weighted points
  • Semester 2: GPA 4.25 (15 credit units) = 63.75 weighted points

Total weighted points = 50.05 + 63.75 = 113.8 Total credit units = 13 + 15 = 28

CGPA = 113.8 ÷ 28 = 4.06

This gives you a CGPA of 4.06, which falls in the Second Class Upper division.

Tips for Improving Your GPA

If you want to achieve a better grade in university, here are some practical tips:

Strategic Course Selection

  • Balance difficult and easier courses each semester
  • Take courses where you have strengths when possible
  • Don’t overload yourself with too many units in one semester

Study Techniques for Nigerian University Examinations

  • Study past questions – Nigerian university exams often follow patterns
  • Form study groups with serious students
  • Take excellent notes during lectures
  • Start studying early, don’t wait until “night before exam” (TDB)

Managing Carryovers and Resit Examinations

  • If you fail a course (score below 40%), you’ll have to retake it (carryover)
  • Prioritize carryover courses to avoid graduation delays
  • The new grade replaces the old one in most universities when calculating CGPA

When and How to Apply for Course Substitutions

Some universities allow you to substitute a failed elective with another course. Check with your department about:

  • Deadline for substitution applications
  • Which courses can be substituted
  • The proper procedure for application

Common Grading Challenges and How to Address Them

Missing Marks or Incorrect Grades

If your result shows “ABS” (absent) but you took the exam or if your grade seems wrong:

  1. First speak to your course lecturer
  2. Fill out a missing result form at your department
  3. Provide evidence like attendance records or assignment submissions
  4. Follow up regularly but respectfully

The Process of Result Verification

Most universities have a formal process for grade verification:

  1. Apply through your department office
  2. Pay any required verification fee
  3. Submit original exam answer booklet number if you have it
  4. Allow 2-4 weeks for processing

Appealing Grades in Nigerian Universities

If you believe a grade is unfair:

  1. First discuss with the course lecturer
  2. If unresolved, write a formal appeal to your department head
  3. Provide evidence to support your case
  4. Be prepared for the entire paper to be remarked (your grade could go down)

Comparison with International Grading Systems

If you plan to study abroad, here’s how Nigerian grades typically convert:

Nigerian to US System Conversion

  • First Class (4.50-5.00) ≈ 4.0/4.0 GPA (A)
  • 2:1 (3.50-4.49) ≈ 3.7/4.0 GPA (A-)
  • 2:2 (2.40-3.49) ≈ 3.0/4.0 GPA (B)
  • Third Class (1.50-2.39) ≈ 2.0/4.0 GPA (C)

Nigerian to UK System Conversion

The UK system is already similar to Nigeria’s with First Class, 2:1, 2:2, Third Class classifications, making conversion straightforward.

What Nigerian Graduates Need for International Applications

  • Official transcript from your university
  • Sometimes a World Education Services (WES) evaluation
  • Explanation of the Nigerian grading system
  • Certificate attestation from the Ministry of Education

The Impact of CGPA on Career Prospects

Minimum CGPA Requirements

  • Many graduate programs require minimum 2:1 (3.50 CGPA)
  • Federal government jobs often require at least 2:2 (2.40 CGPA)
  • Competitive companies like banks, oil & gas companies often look for 2:1 or First Class

How Employers View Different Degree Classifications

  • First Class: Seen as exceptional and highly employable
  • 2:1: Considered the “good degree” standard for most professional jobs
  • 2:2: Acceptable but may limit opportunities with top employers
  • Third Class/Pass: May require additional qualifications to compete effectively

Industries with Strict CGPA Requirements

  • Banking and finance
  • Oil and gas
  • Management consulting
  • Telecommunications
  • Civil service
  • Educational institutions

Special Grading Considerations

Grading During Industrial Training/SIWES

Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is usually graded as:

  • Pass or Fail (not calculated in CGPA)
  • Or on the standard A-F scale (calculated in CGPA) Depends on your university’s policy.

Project/Thesis Grading

Final year projects/theses often carry more units (4-6) and can significantly impact your final CGPA. They’re usually assessed on:

  • Written work quality
  • Oral defense performance
  • Methodology
  • Contribution to knowledge

NYSC and Its Relation to University Grades

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) eligibility is not affected by your grades as long as you have a degree. However, during NYSC, those with better grades might get better placement opportunities.

Scholarships and CGPA Requirements

  • Most scholarships require at least 3.50 CGPA (2:1)
  • Some prestigious scholarships require 4.00+ CGPA
  • Maintaining scholarships usually requires keeping your CGPA above a certain threshold

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still get a good job with a Second Class Lower?

Yes! While some employers have CGPA cutoffs, many value skills, experience, and personality over grades. Focus on developing marketable skills alongside your academics.

Is it possible to improve my CGPA in final year?

Yes, but it gets harder as you progress because you have more credit units accumulated. Final year courses often carry more units though, so doing well can still improve your CGPA.

How do I calculate my GPA manually?

Follow the formula: Sum of (Grade Point × Credit Units) divided by Total Credit Units. Use the calculator tool linked at the top of this article for quick calculations.

What is the minimum CGPA needed for graduate school?

Most Nigerian universities require at least 3.00 or 3.50 CGPA for Master’s programs. International universities vary but typically expect at least a 2:1 equivalent.

Can I have a course grade changed after graduation?

Generally no. Grade changes are extremely difficult after graduation. Address any grade issues before your final results are approved.

Do all courses carry the same weight?

No, courses with higher credit units contribute more to your GPA. A 3-unit course has three times the impact of a 1-unit course.

How does a carryover affect my CGPA?

Initially failing a course brings down your CGPA. When you pass the carryover, the new grade replaces the F (0.0) in your CGPA calculation.
