Because of climate change, emissions of carbon dioxide from industries are a major cause for concern. Many people believe that in order to keep the climate stable, it will be necessary to develop technologies that produce negative emissions and actively remove CO2 from the air. The catalytic conversion of CO2 to synthetic fuels and other value-added products is a promising pathway to achieve this goal, as it simultaneously provides a method for storing renewable energy that is generated from intermittent sources such as solar cells and wind. Moreover, this conversion can be accomplished at a lower cost than other potential pathways. The catalyst-deactivation caused by coking is one of the most significant challenges that are faced when designing CO2 reduction catalysts.

Liquid metals that are non-toxic and can be found at room temperature have only recently been found to be highly resistant to coking. In addition, the surface of liquid metals can be tuned through the design of alloys, which provides an ideal platform for the creation of highly active catalysts.

In the scope of this project, novel catalytic systems that have applications in CO2 reduction will be investigated. In addition to this, the project will center on the development of innovative prototype designs that make the most of the liquid state of the electrode. Our research group will be responsible for developing the production methods that will be used to manufacture the materials. The synthesis of the materials is a straightforward process that requires only a minimal baseline level of expertise in synthetic chemistry. The individual who is vying for a PhD will start by preparing the materials, and then they will carry out a comprehensive characterisation using a variety of techniques based on electron microscopy, in addition to optical and electronic characterisations. After that, the newly developed materials will be incorporated into both established and newly developed prototype reactor designs.

The eligible students at RMIT University will each receive $31,000 over the course of three years, with an additional extension of six months being possible.
