Cardiff University is a public research university located in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. It was established in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire; in 1893, it became one of the founding colleges of the University of Wales; and in 1997, it received (but suspended) its own degree-awarding authority.

It adopted the public name of Cardiff University in 1999, and this became its legal name in 2005, when it separated from the University of Wales to become an independent institution that confers its own degrees.
