As a successor to Queen’s College, Birmingham, which was established in 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery, and Mason Science College, which was established in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason, it obtained its royal charter in 1900. This made it the first English civic or red brick university to obtain its royal charter.

Despite this, the University of Birmingham had a grade point average ranking of equal 13th out of 129 institutions in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, which is an improvement from its previous ranking of equal 31st in the 2014 REF.

Former British Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin, as well as the British composer Sir Edward Elgar and eleven other Nobel laureates, are all associated with the university in some capacity, whether as faculty members or as alumni.

According to the Times Higher Education’s rankings in 2021, Birmingham was the 12th best university in the UK.

The Times Higher Education awards presented their title for “University of the Year 2014” to the institution of higher learning in 2013.

According to the results of the 2013 QS World University Rankings, the University of Birmingham is ranked 10th in the United Kingdom and 62nd globally. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the university was ranked 12th in the United Kingdom.

According to the exercise, 16% of the university’s research was considered to be world-leading, and an additional 41% was deemed to be internationally excellent.
