Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson (born November 19, 1989) is a prolific American rapper and songwriter better known by his stage name Tyga. 2008 marked his signing of a recording contract with the prestigious companies Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records, and Republic Records, following a succession of indie albums.

No Introduction, Tyga’s debut album, was released in the same year as Careless World: Rise of the Last King and Hotel California, both of which reached the great heights of number two on the U.S. Billboard 200. The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty, his fourth album, was published in 2015 and debuted at a very respectable number four on the Billboard 200.

Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson, best known by his stage name Tyga, was born in Compton, California, on November 19, 1989, to parents of mixed Jamaican-Vietnamese descent. His mother, Pasionaye Nguyen, is of Vietnamese ethnicity, while his father is from Jamaica.

Before moving to the nearby city of Gardena at the age of 12, Tyga spent the most of his formative years in Compton. Growing up, he was strongly influenced by Fabolous, Lil Wayne, Cameron, and Eminem, and he frequently discusses his impoverished background in a low-income home.

Young On Probation, his 2007 first mixtape, attracted the attention of Travie McCoy, the main vocalist of the California rap group Gym Class Heroes. Travie McCoy, pleased by the young musician’s talent, offered him a recording deal with one of the numerous indie record labels, DCD2 Records (known then as Decaydence Records).

Tyga and fellow West Coast rapper Schoolboy Q launched the record label G.E.D. Inc. around the same time (Grinding every day, Getting every dollar, or Getting educated every day). Additionally, he has a tattoo of G.E.D. Inc. above his right eyebrow.
