Delta State University has completely eliminated Post UTME examinations for the 2025/2026 academic session, leaving many prospective students wondering exactly how they’ll be selected for admission. This guide explains the new merit-based selection process in simple terms.

DELSU New Merit-Based Selection System

DELSU’s new selection process operates on a straightforward merit-based ranking system that relies entirely on your existing academic credentials. Instead of adding another layer of examination, the university now focuses on the academic achievements you’ve already demonstrated through JAMB and your O’Level examinations.

When you apply for admission, the university’s system will automatically calculate your ranking score using a combination of your JAMB UTME results and O’Level grades. Think of it as creating a single composite score that represents your overall academic performance.

Step-by-Step Selection Process

Step1: Online Registration and Document Upload

The selection process begins when you complete your online registration through DELSU’s official admission portal. During registration, you’ll only need to upload your passport photograph. You won’t upload your JAMB result slip or O’Level certificates during this process.

Instead, you’ll manually key in your O’Level results directly into the system during registration. The system is designed to automatically identify and select the 5 subjects that are most relevant to your chosen course from the O’Level results you enter.

Step 2: Automated Score Calculation and Aggregation

Once you’ve entered your O’Level results, DELSU’s admission system automatically calculates your aggregate score using the 5 relevant subjects it selected for your chosen course. The system assigns appropriate scores to these subjects and generates your final aggregate score, which becomes your ranking score for admission consideration.

Step 3: Merit List Generation

After all applications are processed, the system generates merit lists for each course and department. Students are ranked from highest to lowest composite scores within their chosen programs. The university then determines cut-off points based on available spaces in each department.

Step 4: Admission List Publication

DELSU publishes admission lists in order of merit, starting with the highest-scoring candidates. Students who meet or exceed their department’s cut-off score receive admission offers. If spaces remain available, the university may publish supplementary lists for candidates with slightly lower scores.

How Your Scores Are Evaluated

1. O’Level Aggregate Score Priority

Your O’Level results form the primary basis for ranking in DELSU’s new selection system. When you enter your O’Level grades during registration, the system automatically identifies the 5 subjects most relevant to your chosen course and calculates an aggregate score from these subjects.

2. Subject Selection and Scoring

The automated system intelligently selects subjects based on your course requirements. For example, if you apply for Engineering, the system might automatically pick Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, and one other relevant subject from your O’Level results to calculate your aggregate.

3. JAMB Score Compliance

While your JAMB UTME score may not be the primary ranking factor, it still serves as a basic qualification requirement. You need to meet the minimum JAMB score threshold, but your O’Level aggregate becomes the main determinant of your competitive position.

Ranking and Competition Dynamics

1. Course-Specific Competition

Each department and course maintains its own merit list, meaning you’re competing only against other students who applied for the same program. Popular courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering typically attract high-scoring candidates, resulting in higher cut-off points.

2. Cut-Off Determination

Unlike previous years where cut-off marks were predetermined, the new system generates cut-off points based on the actual scores of applicants and available spaces. If a department has 100 spaces and receives 500 applications, the 100th highest-scoring candidate sets the cut-off mark.

What This Means for Different Student Categories

1. Students with Strong O’Level Results

Students with excellent O’Level grades in subjects relevant to their chosen courses are best positioned in the new system. Since the system automatically selects your 5 best relevant subjects to calculate your aggregate, students with multiple A1s and B2s will rank highest.

2. Average O’Level Performers

Those with mixed O’Level results (combination of Bs and Cs) still have good prospects, especially if they perform well in the core subjects that the system is likely to select for their chosen course. The key is ensuring you have solid grades in the most important subjects for your program.

Strategic Course Selection

Students should carefully consider their course choices based on their O’Level strength areas. If you have excellent grades in Arts subjects but average grades in Sciences, choosing a course that favors your strong subjects will improve your aggregate score and ranking.
