How It Works

The mean (arithmetic average) is the sum of every value in your dataset divided by how many values there are: Mean = (x₁ + x₂ + ... + xₙ) / n, where n is the number of values. Enter or paste your numbers and the calculator sums them and divides by the count automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between mean and average?+

They're the same thing — "mean" is the statistical term for what's commonly called the "average": the sum of all values divided by the count of values.

How should I separate my numbers when pasting a dataset?+

Use commas, new lines, or a mix of both — the calculator splits on either. For example "10, 20, 30" and "10\n20\n30" both work.

What happens if I paste something that isn't a number?+

Any entry that can't be parsed as a number is flagged and excluded from the calculation, and the calculator shows you exactly which entries were ignored so you can fix them.

Is the mean the best way to summarize my data?+

The mean works well for data without extreme outliers. If your dataset has a few very large or very small values that skew the average, the Median Calculator can give a more representative "typical value."
