How It Works

The mode is the value that occurs most frequently in your dataset. The calculator counts how many times each value appears and returns whichever value (or values) has the highest count. If two or more values are tied for the highest frequency, the dataset is multi-modal and all of the tied values are shown. If every value in the dataset appears exactly once, there is no meaningful mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my dataset has two or more values tied for most frequent?+

That's a multi-modal dataset, and the calculator lists every tied value as a mode — for example, [1, 1, 2, 2, 3] is bimodal with modes 1 and 2, each appearing twice.

What if none of my values repeat?+

If every value in your dataset appears exactly once, there's no value that occurs "most often" more than any other, so the calculator reports that the dataset has no mode.

Can the mode be used for non-numeric data, like categories?+

Mathematically yes — mode is the only measure of central tendency that works for categorical (non-numeric) data — but this calculator is built for numeric datasets. For category counts, tally them manually.

Can a dataset have more than two modes?+

Yes — if three or more distinct values are all tied for the highest frequency, the calculator will list all of them.
