How It Works
Choose a source type and enter the author(s) as 'Last, First' (semicolon-separated for multiple), title, and the container-specific fields (site name, publisher, journal name, etc.). The tool follows MLA 9th edition's core rules: the first author is listed 'Last, First', a second author as 'First Last', three or more authors abbreviated to 'et al.', titles of short works in quotation marks, and container information (journal or site name, volume/issue, date, URL) listed after the title.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is only the first author listed as 'Last, First'?+
MLA style inverts only the first author's name for alphabetization in the Works Cited list; any second author is written in normal 'First Last' order, and three or more authors are shortened to the first author's name followed by 'et al.'
Should the title be in quotation marks or italics?+
MLA puts titles of short works (webpages, articles, book chapters) in quotation marks, and titles of whole/standalone works (books, whole websites, journals) in italics. This tool applies quotation marks for webpage and article titles; add italics yourself when pasting a book title into your document if your word processor doesn't already italicize it.
What date format does MLA expect for the 'Accessed' field?+
MLA uses the day-month-year format with abbreviated months, e.g. '25 Aug. 2026'. Enter it that way in the Accessed date field for a website source.
