How It Works
Every keystroke re-runs simple text analysis in your browser: words are counted by splitting on whitespace, sentences by counting runs of text ending in '.', '!', or '?', and paragraphs by counting blocks of text separated by a blank line. Estimated reading time is your word count divided by the words-per-minute (WPM) value you set (default 225 WPM, a common average adult silent-reading speed).

No. All counting happens locally in your browser as you type — your text is never sent to a server, so it's safe to paste unpublished coursework or project drafts.
Why does my word count look slightly different from Microsoft Word's?+
Word processors sometimes count hyphenated words, numbers, or footnotes differently. This tool counts any run of non-whitespace characters as one word, which is the same approach most online word counters use.
My lecturer set a word limit like '2,500 words ±10%' — how do I check I'm within it?+
